Species - Tormentil (Potentilla Erecta)

Location - Derwent Valley, Peak District

Grid ref - SK 17954 90352

Tormentil is an easily recognisable plant and is well known in the Mountain Leader world, as it is quite a common species in the UK’s mountains. Rumour has it, that it is a natural Viagra, hence its Latin name Potentilla Erecta, but although this is a great way to remember its Latin name, it’s not actually true.

Tormentil generally flowers from May to September but I have seen it flowering throughout the year in the Peak District during mild winters. It is found on acidic soil, and is distinguishable from the Buttercup which has 5 yellow petals, whereas Tormentil has 4 yellow petals.

Tormentil is a member of the Rose family and was traditionally used to treat colic, gum disorders, wounds and inflammation. It was also used as a toothpaste and even to make a type of schnapps!
